Introduction to the Cambodia Bicycle Project

Hello, my name is Katsuya Yasuda, President of Pearl Co., Ltd from Japan. Please allow me to share a little of my story.

I first visited Cambodia in the fall of 2015. My purpose was to support junior high school students from impoverished families. While scholarships are significant, I quickly realized that bicycles are essential for children to continue attending school. Our partner, the Education for Development Foundation (EDF), has also stressed the urgent need for more bicycles.

I cannot achieve this alone. With everyone’s cooperation, I sincerely wish to provide the next generation of children with education opportunities. That is why I launched this project. Please lend us your support. We genuinely need your help.

First, please read the explanation and Q&A below.

If you agree with our mission, kindly apply through the application page.

Thank you very much.

Why Bicycles Are Needed

Our support targets junior high school students living in rural areas. Each junior high school covers a vast area, so the commuting distance naturally becomes long. Just as in rural Japan, students in Cambodia also ride bicycles to school. However, their commuting distance is often 10–20 kilometers. Without bicycles, children must walk for several hours each way.

Some might ask, “If they can still walk, isn’t that fine?” But the harsh reality of family circumstances must be considered. In rural areas, most parents are farmers. Farming is hard work from early morning until late at night, and junior high school children are an essential source of labor. Many parents tell their children, “Stop wasting time at school and help with the farm work!” and the children are forced to give up on education.

For low-income families, farming usually means cultivating crops in poor soil, yielding very little income. They cannot escape poverty because they have no other means.

When I visited Cambodia, the children from such families all said the same thing: “I want to change my situation.” They told me, “I want to study hard at school, create a better future for myself, and support my family.”

I cannot change this situation on my own. I could help one child or one family, but that alone changes nothing. The children themselves must create change for the future. That is why I want to provide them with education—the power to open doors to new possibilities. This is why we provide both scholarships and bicycles.

What We Provide

1. Bicycle Support

We provide children with a bicycle and a repair kit as a set.
Cost: 12,000 yen (tax included) per set.

Why a repair kit? Please look at this photo. Rural Cambodia has no paved roads and no bicycle shops. Bicycles puncture frequently, and the children themselves must do repairs. Without repair kits, the bicycles would soon become unusable.

2. Bicycle Repair Club Support

We establish bicycle repair clubs at junior high schools. We provide repair tools, consumable parts, and training on bicycle repair.
Cost: 60,000 yen (tax included) per club.

There are three reasons for creating repair clubs:

  1. Convenience: Even though bicycles come with repair kits, there are times when children cannot fix them. A repair club at the school serves as a substitute for a bicycle shop.
  2. Sustainability: If graduates no longer need their bicycles, they can pass them down to younger students through the repair club, ensuring ongoing support.
  3. Future Employment: In Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, bicycles are widely used, and there are many bicycle shops. Junior high students who gain repair skills may find future employment or even open their own shop.

3. Supply of Consumables to Bicycle Repair Club Suppot

So far, the Cambodia Bicycle Project has established 45 repair clubs (one has since closed). Many of these clubs lack spare parts, preventing them from repairing bicycles. We provide funding to supply necessary consumables.
Cost: 60,000 yen (tax included) per club.

Through experience, we realized: “Without a stable supply of parts, bicycles cannot be repaired.” When we visited five clubs one year after their establishment, most parts had run out, and schools lacked the budget to replace them. When we delivered new parts, children were delighted: “Now we can repair bicycles again!” This is why we aim to provide annual replenishments of consumables to each repair club.

4. Flexible Support

This plan allows us to allocate your support where it is most needed—bicycles, repair clubs, or consumables.
Contribution: from 1,100 yen (tax included).

Project Operation Costs

Operational costs cover publicity, preparation, and shipping of return gifts, and on-site activities.

Per bicycle: 1,000 yen
Per repair club: 5,000 yen
Flexible support: 100 yen per unit
